Over the past 17 years, the Lawrence S. Ting Foundation and Phu My Hung Corporation have continuously implemented community-oriented projects, spreading the spirit of sharing. In which, the Lawrence S. Ting Scholarship program has made practical contributions to the study and talent promotion of Vietnam’s education. Upto June 2021, 6,554 scholarships with a total value of more than 51.3 billion VND have been awarded to students from 63 provinces and cities nationwide.
In 2021, before the complicated development of the pandemic, “Lawrence S. Ting Scholarship Award Ceremony” was not held, but the Lawrence S. Ting Foundation continued to support 239 scholarships directly for students and 4.95 billion dong for charity Funds and Associations. This timely support not only gave students more motivation to rise up, but also was a “lifesaver” for them to overcome difficulties during the pandemic. This year, “The 20th Lawrence S. Ting Scholarship Award Ceremony and the 2022 Sponsorship Ceremony” is expected to be held in September 2022, in Phu My Hung, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, including direct and indirect scholarships.
With the direct awarding of scholarships, the program will award 214 scholarships directly to students. Each scholarship is worth 14 million VND/year for university students and 6.3 million VND/year for high school students. The criteria to receive the scholarship are students with outstanding academic achievements, community spirit and desire to participate in volunteer activities in the future. With the indirect scholarship award, the Lawrence S. Ting Foundation will also give grants to funds, charity associations and study promotion associations in 63 provinces and cities nationwide. Those are the Vietnam Children Protection Fund, the City Fund for the Poor (under the Vietnam Fatherland Front – Ho Chi Minh City), HCMC Association for Sponsoring Poor Patients, HCMC Association for Sponsoring People with Disabilities and Orphans, Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund and Study Promotion Association. These Funds and Associations will represent the Lawrence S. Ting Foundation and Phu My Hung Corporation to consider and grant scholarships to students who overcome difficulties in studying, children of ethnic minorities, and disabled children, orphans… Not only supporting students with material things, the Lawrence S. Ting scholarship also sows seeds of charity in theirhearts, encouraging a sense of responsibility towards the community, so that when they become adults, they know how to care more, help those in difficult circumstances and contribute to the community. This is the foundation of humanity and the long-term goal of the Lawrence S. Ting scholarship program.
The Lawrence S. Ting scholarship program was initiated in 2006 and has been operating for 17 years now. After each scholarship award, the Foundation still keeps in touch with and updates students’ information. It is known that the students still maintain good academic performance and conduct at school, the graduation rate reaches 100%. Among them, many high school students after graduation continue to study abroad and many others have passed the entrance exam to major universities and colleges inthe country. The majorityof college and university students, after graduation, start working at reputable companies and corporations; some students receive scholarship and continue to study abroad for Master/PhD programs; some other students are retained to work for the school and follow a Master’s program. In order to create more motivation for future generations and encourage them to overcome their fate, the cooperation from units, businesses and individuals will make a significant contribution to helping them have a brighter future.
