Recently, the Phu My Hung security team uncovered a clever scam involving two individuals who damaged vehicles under the guise of offering repair services. The incident occurred on October 6, 2024, around 4 PM.
The first target was Mr. H., whose motorbike was parked at a convenience store on Pham Van Nghi Street. One of the scammers approached the bike, knelt down briefly, and then moved to a nearby bench. When Mr. H. came out of the store and found that his motorbike wouldn’t start, the scammer casually approached, struck up a conversation, and handed him the contact information of a supposed “repairman.”
A short while later, the same individual went to a coffee shop on Ton Dat Tien Street, where they tampered with Ms. T.H.’s motorbike. Once again, the individual played the role of a passerby, offering to introduce a repairman. Both Mr. H. and Ms. T.H. called the provided number, and a “mobile repairman” showed up to assess and fix the bikes.
The entire scheme was caught on Phu My Hung’s surveillance cameras, and the security team immediately notified the local police. At 5 PM that same day, just as the scammers were about to collect their “repair servive fees”, they were apprehended by Tan Phong Ward Police.
At the station, the suspects confessed to their misaction. D.Q.H. (born 1982, from Ha Tinh) admitted to deliberately disabling the motorbikes (by disconnecting the ignition coil wire), allowing P.V.H. to swoop in as the repairman and charge exorbitant fees. The case is currently under investigation by the Tan Phong Ward Police.
